"My commitment to mentoring new Canadians continues to be an extremely rewarding experience. For me, it was simply listening and sharing from my own experiences to help bring the best out of my mentees and open doors of opportunity. I highly encourage professionals to consider participating in this program."

Chandra Sharma, MCIP RPP, Watershed Specialist, Etobicoke- Mimico

Mentee's Story:

When Elham arrived to Canada she brought with her all the passion and expertise of an educated and skilled environmental education professional. Here is what she had to say about her experience in mentoring:

"I had incredible mentors at TRCA that [...] helped me a lot and I have a great relationship with them now. I learned how to prepare myself to find the employment opportunity. I have more self-confidence compared to when I first came to Canada. These experiences affected my life. [...] I improved my networking, learned about Canadian culture, how to find the job posting, I met many people in my field and I got many points from professional people. The most important lesson I learned, be positive and just keep doing." Elham, M2P Candidate, 2010

 What Mentors Do:

By meeting with your mentee or otherwise connecting with them for up to one hour a week at a mutually convenient place and time over a four month period, you will help to open your mentee's horizons, provide insight and valuable feedback, instill confidence and hope, and help your mentee open doors to employment.

Examples of activities in the mentoring relationship:

  • review your mentee's resume
  • practice mock interviews
  • discuss job search process
  • build strategies for expanding your mentee's network
  • identify professional development opportunities
  • discuss Canadian workplace etiquette and culture
  • practice small talk
  • and many others ...

You and your mentee will not be alone on this journey. A dedicated M2P program staff will work to match you with a mentee, orient you to the mentoring process, provide you with tools and training, and support you and your mentee for the duration of your relationship.

 As a mentor you will:

  • be a part of a larger mentoring community of environmental professionals
  • be invited to networking and recognition events at TRCA
  • be offered training in Intercultural Communication by Multicultural Business Solutions, an award winning consulting firm
